ERA National Conference Nov. 15-16 Roger Williams University Bristol, RI

Join academics and activists -- including Ellie Smeal, Terry O’Neill, Bobbie Francis, and Bettina Hager -- for this important national conference on the ERA. Registration is open and interest is high, so sign up early. Information is available at http://www.rwu.edu/academics/conferences/era.

New wording for traditional ERA ratification bill in the House - On Aug. 1 Rep. Carolyn Maloney introduced her traditional ERA ratification bill (H.J. Res. 56) with slightly revised wording:

Section 1. Women shall have equal rights in the United States and every place subject to its jurisdiction. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Section 2. Congress and the several States shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.'

In Section 1, the first sentence, adapted from Alice Paul’s original 1923 ERA, has been added to include women specifically in the Constitution and to clarify the intent of the amendment to make discrimination on the basis of a person's sex unconstitutional. The second sentence is identical to the wording of S.J. Res. 10 and the 1972 ERA.

In Section 2, the addition of "and the several States" restores wording that was supported by Alice Paul but that was removed before the amendment's passage in 1972. It affirms that enforcement of the constitutional prohibition of sex discrimination is a function of both federal and state levels of government.

ERA Coalition to expand ratification efforts - Lawyer and feminist activist Jessica Neuwirth -- co-founder of Equality Now, an organization that advocates for the human rights of women and girls globally -- has turned her talents to the cause of the ERA with the founding of an ERA Coalition to expand ratification efforts. Representatives of key NCWO organizations working on the ERA have been involved in the initiative, and wider membership outreach will begin shortly. Further information is available from Jessica at jneuwirth@eracoalition.org.

  1. Sadly, once again a presentation by those who do not even know what is actually taking off in the nation's states when it comes to getting ERA actually PASSED to make sex discrimination a violation of the US Constitution in many cases.

RI University doesn't even know apparently the hard work going on nor how Big that movement IS out in the States. Could be that the public will again be misled, left uninformed, and apathetic about what IS actually going on for ERA.

But, it seems often to be the case when Progream leaders seek out those who've done nothing to speak of for ERA, but appear at hand, easy to get to speak about that which they know little or nothing about actions taking place.

For example, did the organizers of the ERA Conference there even KNOW that one of the Three required state ratifications is going to happen shortly?

    I thought now.
