Angela Bowen, classical ballerina, dance teacher, mentor, feminist activist, and professor has influenced and inspired untold numbers across six decades; speaking out as strongly for the Arts as she has for Feminist, Black, and LGBT rights. The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen will inspire diverse audiences to pursue their dreams with tenacity and courage, and not for themselves alone. Please check out the two minute slide show narrated by Jennifer Abod.
Bowen grew up in Roxbury, Massachusetts in the 1940s and 50s where she discovered dance, her first love at the age of 14. In the face of poverty and racism, she followed her heart's first passions and became a classical ballerina. She travelled to Europe to dance professionally, the only outlet for many black performers of the time, and opened a dance studio in inner city New Haven Connecticut with her husband, training and inspiring untold numbers of children and influencing an entire city, for nearly 20 years.
At mid life, Bowen began following other passions as: a writer; black feminist writer, speaker , organizer and lesbian activist from the late 1970's to the 1990s. In her mid-fifties she returned to finish her Bachelor's degree and went on to receive her PhD in Women's Studies, one of the first two women in the country to do so, and began mentoring university students at California State University Long Beach where she taught Women's Studies and English.
Your immediate generosity will make it possible to complete The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen in the fall of 2013 and add to our Feminist Herstory.
